Binding Demons Why, When and How Does This Help?

Mark Virkler's picture

I listened as the man on the phone shared the years of stress in his relationship with his "jealous" wife. According to him, she was fearful that if he even glanced at a woman, he was going to have an affair with her. I counseled him that both of them needed to go through Prayers that Heal the Heart. He agreed, but said when he suggested it, she backed away. I recommended binding the demons within her so that she was free to make her own decision, without the influence of controlling spirits. He asked, "Can you provide guidance so I know how to do that?" Here is my instruction to him.

Deliverance is to be normal

Casting out demons was normal for Jesus, therefore I feel it should be normal for us today. It is for me. In the verse below, Jesus lets us know that it is the power of the Holy Spirit which enables us to cast out demons. When we do cast a demon out, we are releasing the kingdom of God to a person. Nice!

"But if I cast out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. Or how can anyone enter the strong man's house and carry off his property, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house" (Matt. 12:28-29).

Here are all remaining verses in the New Testament on binding the strong man

  • If Satan has risen up against himself and is divided, he cannot stand, but he is finished! But no one can enter the strong man's house and plunder his property unless he first binds the strong man, and then he will plunder his house (Mk. 3:26-27).
  • And if I by Beelzebul cast out demons, by whom do your sons cast them out? But if I cast out demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you. When a strong man, fully armed, guards his own house, his possessions are undisturbed. But when someone stronger than he attacks him and overpowers him, he takes away from him all his armor on which he had relied and distributes his plunder (Lk. 11:19-22).
  • I will give you the keys of the kingdom of heaven; and whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven, and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven (Matt. 16:18-19).

How and when would I bind the strong man?

If I am doing deliverance, I generally bind each demon before commanding it to leave in Jesus' Name.

If there is any struggle, I check for additional repentance and removal of any anchors the demon is attached to. I am also likely to bind the strong man in Jesus' Name and command it to separate from all other demons and from the person.

In the case of the above man who felt demons were working in his wife, my advice is to bind the demons influencing her. Simply say, “I bind all demons in my wife, in Jesus' Name. I command you to be still in Jesus' Name. I pray for the convincing power of the Holy Spirit to speak truth into my wife’s heart now, in Jesus' Name.”

I would do this daily until such time as there was a hunger in his wife’s heart to go for deliverance and actually have the demons cast out. Then they should go through the seven Prayers That Heal the Heart, as this removes all anchors. After that, the demon is cast out quite easily. Generally there are multiple demons to be cast out in any situation. I remember the day I had 20 or more cast out of me. It produced a huge improvement in my life, my peace and my walk with God.

Once delivered, fill your heart and mind with revelation knowledge from God!

Once delivered you want to begin memorizing Scriptures, doing two-way journaling, and practicing new thought processes which the Lord is speaking to you and which are the OPPOSITE of the thoughts the demon was giving you. Otherwise, your heart is swept and empty, which is not what you want. You need your heart and mind filled with the Spirit of truth.

"When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, 'I will return to my house from which I came.' "And when it comes, it finds it swept and put in order. "Then it goes and takes along seven other spirits more evil than itself, and they go in and live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first" (Lk. 11:24-26).

What kinds of problems might demons be causing in a person?

In the New Testament we see demons causing physical infirmity, emotional problems and mental problems (Mk. 9:25; Matt. 12:22; Lk. 13:11,12; Mk. 5:1-20; Matt. 17:14-18).

What would I expect to see after I have bound the demons operating in a person? I would expect a temporary release of the symptoms or behavior that the demon was causing. I see binding as a short-term "tying up" of a demon until such time as you have the right to cast it out. That right must be given by the affected individual and involves the removal of the legal anchors for the demon being there through applying the first six prayers which we teach in this blog on Prayers That Heal the Heart. Then commanding the demon to leave works quite quickly and effortlessly.

It is likely that you would bind the demons every day until the person is ready for deliverance. Actually, if an hour later I saw the demonic behavior re-surface, I would bind it again then. Binding can be done out loud or under your breath. Obviously, you would not do it out loud in a setting which would be upsetting to those in your presence.

Would I consider binding demons a form of prayer? Not really. I am not asking God for anything. I am commanding a demon to submit to the name of Jesus based on the authority He has given to me as a believer. He has given you the same authority, so as His Spirit leads, use it!

Question: Is it appropriate to bind demons in a person who is not yet saved, not knowing when they may become saved, which means you may be binding demons, possibly, repeatedly, over a potentially long period?

Answer: I believe this is a valid practice, and I would couple with it, praying for the Holy Spirit to convict them of truth. I would also pray a Hedge of Thorns around them.
