You probably know about Communion with God Ministries from a live or virtual seminar by Mark or Charity, or through our many resources for adult Christian education. It is true that these are the heart of our ministry – our reason for being – but there is more that we do.
Many years ago when Patti was homeschooling our young children, the Lord gave her a dream of having a library she could take them to where she wouldn’t have to worry that the content of any of the materials they chose would be contrary to spiritual truths she was instilling in Chari and Josh. Thirty years later, the ministry was able to purchase the perfect building for both our offices and a library, and the dream became a reality.
When we moved to Florida, we were able to hire two other former homeschooling moms who have invested in the dream and carried it even further. We thought you might like to hear their report of where the library is today.
From the Librarian's Desk...
The Love Story Library is a service ministry of Communion with God Ministries. The name of our library was chosen as a constant reminder that the greatest Love Story ever told is that God so loved the world that He sent His Son to die for our sins and to rise victorious from the grave so that we may live with Him forever. The private library, located in Cheektowaga, NY, was formed in 2006 to serve the communities in and around Buffalo, NY. The library serves people from many different churches and denominations, and is unique to the area and quite possibly unique to the entire United States.
All ages, from children to adults, can find materials at our library. We have books, audiobooks, DVDs, CDs, and magazines. All items are consistent with Christian values. In addition, the library has a homeschool resource center, where homeschool families can come and explore curriculum options. Those with homeschooling questions can make an appointment and have a homeschool specialist answer all their homeschool questions.
While the library has grown steadily every year, the past two years have seen giant leaps in membership. Draconian laws passed in New York State in 2019 drove many to homeschool their children, and school shut-downs in 2020 due to COVID-19 convinced even more parents to take charge of their children’s education. In total, about 100 new families contacted the library to get questions answered about homeschooling, and then made the decision to join the library, as well. We are continuing to get calls from families interested in beginning a homeschool journey. In the past, the people who chose to homeschool were strong Christians with a solid church background. The past two years have brought families to our library that have not always thought about what having a relationship with God actually means. We are excited to see God moving in these families as they transition to a new way of educating their children.
The library provided many activities pre-COVID. A monthly story hour for children ages 3 and up was heavily attended, and included stories, a craft and a snack. Special presentations by talented people in the community sharing their knowledge have also been offered, including maple syrup producers, Civil War experts, and flower arranging classes. A special needs support group meets monthly at the library, and in the summer, many workshops were held for parents considering homeschooling, to provide information and answer questions.
Currently, the library has 575 patrons - most with large families. Many patrons both to the north and to the south drive 45 minutes just to come to our library. We take no government funding, and rely on donations to purchase new materials. We try to provide materials that will help those in our community. Seminary students come to us looking for resources they can use, and Christian families are always looking for materials. 100% of donations are used to buy more materials for the library.
God has continued to bless Patti’s vision of the Love Story Library and if you would like to be a part of this unique and fruitful ministry we invite you to partner with us through your giving. Thank you!
