ABCs Nightline Showcases Scientific Study of Speaking in Tongues

At the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Andrew Newberg has been conducting a scientific study of the phenomenon for a long time. According to an ABC report, Newberg found that brain scans show quite different results with charismatics praying in tongues compared to Buddhist monks meditating and Franciscan nuns praying. The frontal lobesthe part of the brain right behind the forehead thats considered the brains control centerwent quiet in the brains of tongue-speakers.

When they are actually engaged in this whole very intense spiritual practice...their frontal lobes tend to go down in activity. It is very consistent with the kind of experience they have, because they say that theyre not in charge. [They say] its the voice of God, its the Spirit of God that is moving through them, said Newberg.

Whatever is coming out of their mouth is not what they are purposefully or willfully trying to do. And thats in fairly stark contrast to the people who arelike the Buddhist and Franciscan nunsin prayer, because they are very intensely focused and in those individuals the frontal lobes actually increase activity.

Says one participant in the study, Pastor Gerry Stoltzfoos, I dont think faith has anything to be afraid of from science. Science validates faith, so bring it on, whatever the facts are, bring it on.

When you have experienced this, you dont really care what anybody else thinks. It is personal in the first place; it is something between you and God, said Stoltzfoos. So we dont really care if it is validated or not, but it is fascinating when it is, so that people who have thought we are crazy can have something to look at andwe are still crazy, we are just not as crazy as they thought.


Two-way Journaling: Gods Football Camp Rev. Steve C. Stutz
Lord, yesterday was one long experience of frustration from start to end. This morning it seems to be continuing. Whats up with this?

Steve, do you remember football camp? You came out in the August heat and spent two weeks doing twice a day grass drills. There wasnt a football in sight, yet you endured this because you knew the season was quickly approaching.

Yesterday I led you through some patience and waiting drills to prepare you for the season! You moved from one setting to another, but each had the same theme. Towards evening you finally began to ask Me what point I wanted to pound into your head.

Yesterday was only a warm up. Yesterday was My love for you becoming enfleshed in the circumstances of your lifesitting in waiting rooms, sitting in offices, sitting in traffic, etc. You know, of course, I was sitting right there with youjust waiting for you to notice Me and let Me take over.

Another thing is how you didnt take your football camp days very seriously. I remember your plan was to lurk about on the sidelines all season and do nothing. I had a great big belly laugh when I saw the look on your face when you heard your name as a starter!

You played every defensive down from then on, but you were seriously behind the curve because you hadnt taken training seriously. In this next season of your life, the opponent who lines up against you wont be flesh and blood. I want you to be preparing in earnest for what will come.

Yesterday I stretched you a little. You are still a little sore, but you are stronger now. My point is about flexibility. If you are going to be present and responsive to Me, you have to be flexible. I blew your schedule out of the water. When you ask Me what I want you to do, it wont fit neatly in your Daytimer. I will make Myself inconvenient for you so that you must break away from yourself.

Steve, continue to seek Me and to follow My leading. Do not concern yourself with what is respectable in the sight of your peers. You are being transformed by Me and I am really excited about the battles that lay ahead for you. The best is yet to come. I am with you and I love you. Have a great day and stay tuned to Me.
