Question: "Dr. Majors, there is so much information out there about so many supplements to take to prevent cancer. If I can only afford one supplement for my family, what would you suggest?"
Dr. Majors: That's easy, it's Vitamin D3! Here is why - when a cell becomes damaged or has aged and reached its lifespan, the p53 gene, in charge of apoptosis, must be accessed by vitamin D, and then the p53 destroys the cell which is then replaced by new cells. But in the absence of adequate vitamin D, the p53 gene is not activated and the damaged or aged cell does not follow the natural replacement, and is instead granted immortality (doesn't die) and can then move on to develop into cancer. There are about 20,000 genes that we know of in our DNA, and an astounding 10% of them require vitamin D to be activated!
In order for the body to generate sufficient vitamin D, the whole body has to be exposed to the sun daily for 15-20 minutes between 11 and 2. That will create an oily film on the skin that will be reabsorbed at night in order for the body to create vitamin D. This kind of sun exposure is rare, and even then, if one takes a shower and dries off with a towel, the benefit is lost in the process.
As you can see it can be difficult to get this much sun daily; that's why it's crucial to take it orally: Adult - 5000 IUs daily and Child - 2500 IUs daily. This can change based on the weight of the person. Also don't guess - TEST! Do a vitamin D3 blood test at minimum 1 time a year, but I suggest my patients test 2x a year and cancer patients test every 3 months! The correct test is 25(OH)D, also called 25-hydroxyvitamin D. The goal is to be between 70-80ng/ml.
*A Norwegian study showed that breast cancer patients diagnosed in the summer when vitamin D levels are highest had up to 25% better survival rates than patients diagnosed in the winter when vitamin D levels are lower.
*Breast cancer patients with low levels of vitamin D and followed for up to eleven years had a 70% greater chance of dying and twice the rate of developing metastasis than did patients with high levels of vitamin D.
Question: I've heard that Vitamin D3 doesn't absorb easily into the body. What form of the supplement would you suggest - liquid?
Dr. Majors' response: Make sure it’s a whole food, not synthetic; read the label. Also, if it's cheap, it's probably synthetic. The most affordable supplement is the one that WORKS...
Question: Dr. Majors... Would you also suggest that the D3, being that's it fat soluble, be taken specifically with a meal that contains (healthy) fats in it? (to ensure proper digestive enzyme production for the breakdown of fats)
Dr. Majors' response: Yes, taken with food is best, but if you can't, still take it...
Question: Do you recommend the same testing timetable for your kids?
Dr. Majors' response: Yes, you can order a simple blood spot test yearly.
