daily word - listen

Dale Cresap's picture

Do you think evangelism involves only speaking? You are called to fulfill the Great Commission of proclaiming the gospel message to every creature, to the ends of the earth. Does this sound like a one-way flow of information? How seriously do you take people who won’t listen to you? Do you want to listen to them? Put yourself in the position of your audience. Don’t you thrive on having your story heard? Listening will give you favor with the people you are trying to reach. Their stories won’t hurt you. The most basic requirement of any communication is to keep the conversation going.

daily word - spiritual fitness

Dale Cresap's picture

Do you take physical fitness seriously? Everyone knows how to attain strength and stamina, but it takes discipline, intention, and persistence to get results. Good intentions are more prevalent than good results. Is godliness more profitable than bodily exercise? You could think of this as spiritual fitness. Is the path to obtain this as obvious as it is for physical fitness? Do you think it also requires discipline, intention, and persistence? What exercises or practices would you choose to obtain it? Do you know people who are spiritually fit? How did they get that way?

daily word - stronger

Dale Cresap's picture

Have you heard that whatever doesn’t kill you will make you stronger? This isn’t true. There are things that will make you weaker even if you survive them. But it is true that adversity is necessary for development. You gain strength physically by exertion, and you gain strength in other ways by overcoming. This process works better if it is intentional and directed, and so you have coaches and teachers and trainers to guide you. Do you see me as performing this role in your life? You know that fathers chasten their sons and my chastening of you is evidence of my acceptance of you.

daily word - only human

Dale Cresap's picture

Have you ever heard anyone excuse their frailties and shortcomings by saying they are only human? Have you ever done this yourself? Can you see how this is an insult to me? For not only are you my creation, and so embedded flaws are a reflection on my workmanship, but I further state that you are created in my image, which only people can claim, and this compounds the issue. Theologians will debate the meaning of this concept, but you don’t have to wait for their verdict to live your life now.

daily word - abundance

Dale Cresap's picture

Do you believe in a world of abundance? Do you think there is enough for everyone? Do you resent the rich, thinking that they have more than their share, and that they obtained it by unjust means from the poor, and that if they would just be more generous with what I have given them there would be enough for everyone? Do you think this argument applies only to those who have more than you, and not to those with less who consider you to be rich? When I created a world of abundance, I knew in advance that some would have more than others and allowed for that.

daily word - encourage

Dale Cresap's picture

What do you think of as a source of courage? Do you see this as an intrinsic property, or something that you generate yourself? You are familiar with the word ‘encouragement’. Can you see how clearly this implies that courage can be imparted from one to another? Have you ever been hesitant to do something you wanted to do, out of doubt or fear, and had a friend persuade you that you can and should go through with it? Did this help you to move ahead, and did you find out that they were right? So this is clearly an impartation of courage.

daily word - commitment

Dale Cresap's picture

Do you like to keep your options open? Who wouldn’t want to give themselves the maximum freedom to choose for as long as possible? Do you believe in commitment? Can you see that these are opposite concepts? Have you had the frustration of trying to organize an activity and get people involved? Organizing an event is an implied promise of your own involvement. Others can remain indecisive, or commit. Which of these do you consider to be the more admirable trait? Commitment constrains your liberty to decide in the moment, but liberty is not an ultimate value.

daily word - plans

Dale Cresap's picture

Are you a goal-oriented person? Do you make firm plans for the future and follow them through to completion? There is a passage of scripture that says you should do this if I will, that you should leave the door open for me to change your plans. You can hold your future intentions with humility. Have you ever had your plans change for reasons beyond your control? Have you ever sensed that I intervened to change them? Have my interventions made things better or worse for you? Please understand that this is not a criticism of goals or planning.

daily word - onward journey?

Dale Cresap's picture

Do you see your faith as unchanging, or do you see yourself on a journey of continuing revelation? You can start with the first position, and shift to the second over time. Would it be arrogant to assume that you got complete comprehension of everything at the first? This position closes you off from learning and growth. It is more difficult to revisit issues the harder you cling to them. If you ever have to revise your understanding you will find it is easier to do if you hold it with a loose grip.

daily word - outrage

Dale Cresap's picture

Do you ever experience outrage? Are there situations so unjust that rage is the only possible response? Have you found that this is helpful in resolving the situation? But it will consume you. In many cases those responsible are far away in high positions of leadership and your rage has  no effect. It can also be generated on the basis of fictional stories, and what is the advantage of that? Does it make it better or worse if you have access to the object of your wrath and can express it directly? Truly righteous indignation is really rare.
