Leading Worshipers into the Throne Room

Mark Virkler's picture

“Throne room worship” is defined as “joining the heavenly chorus in the throne room in praise, worship and adoration before our King.” Since we are seated with Christ in heavenly places (Eph. 2:6), we are already present in the throne room. As we look, we can see the worship taking place before the Lord. As worshippers on earth, we are joining with this multitude in the heavens and together we are worshipping before our King.  See an example of throne room worship here (start 12 minutes in).

Watch Mark speaking about throne room worship on YouTube

If a worship team and a congregation see themselves worshipping before the throne and beholding their King, worship takes on a whole new dimension. It is deepened. It is more heart felt. It is more passionate. It releases more of the presence and power of God.

Some folks, (about 5-25%, from polls I have taken), do this naturally. The remaining ones need to be taught or led into this experience. It is easy to lead a congregation into throne room worship. For starters the worship team themselves need to be opening their spiritual eyes and praying that the eyes of their hearts be enlightened (Eph. 1:17,18). Then they look to see what the Holy Spirit wants to show them. Those who are natural visionaries will see a lot more than those who are naturally analytical, however we all can see visions to some extent as God has poured His Spirit out upon us all.

Since we have not because we ask not, we choose to ask God to show us a vision of the worship taking place before His throne. Then we look, just as John did in Rev. 4:1 (“I looked, and…”). Then we allow the Holy Spirit to take over just as John did. In the following verse John says, “I was in the Spirit…” (Rev. 4:2).  So we are tuning to flowing images. “Flow” is the way the Holy Spirit guides our hearts (Jn. 7:38-39). We are allowing God to show us visions of the worship taking place in His very Presence.

We see the thrones and the Father and Son sitting on them, and the Holy Spirit swirling around throughout the entire scene. Before the thrones are vast multitudes, worshipping the King. They stand, kneel, bow, dance, clap and wave banners as they honor their Lord in their midst. We join with that heavenly host doing similar things as we worship our Lord.

We shouldn’t make this hard. It must be easy enough for children to do, for we are commanded to come before the Lord as little children (Matt. 18:3). So we ask, we look, we tune to flow, and we follow along in faith that the flowing pictures we are seeing are indeed visions presented to us by the indwelling Spirit (Jn. 7:37-39). Why wouldn’t they be? He has promised that when we ask for the Spirit we receive the Spirit (Lk. 11:13) and that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us and gives us the requests we have made of Him (1 Jn. 5:14,15). We know it is His will to give us visions (Acts 2:17). So we receive in faith, period! The accuser can take his doubt and unbelief and leave!

So now that the worship team is seeing in the Spirit, they can lead the congregation into doing the same.

I feel it is very helpful to begin the worship service with a simple short prayer and declaration, so that everyone gets on the same page and lifts up their eyes to the heavens to behold their King. In light of this, I am offering below some short prayers as possible models for worship leaders to use as they begin a worship service.

“Lord, we come to present ourselves before Your throne in heavenly worship. Open the eyes of our hearts so we may behold You, seated upon Your throne with lightening flashing from Your hand (Hab. 3:4). We allow that light to pierce us as we enter into your Presence. Anoint our eyes that we may behold You. Anoint our ears that we may hear You. We come before Your heavenly throne with praise, worship and adoration.”

Then follow this up with a visionary song that depicts us coming in praise before Almighty God and declaring His grandeur, His glory and His watchful care and provision over our lives. This brings us to dancing and celebrating before our King.

Of course there are lots of prayers that could be adapted from the Psalm. Passages from the prophets and the book of Revelation could be short introductions to successive worship services, and there are many visionary songs which would lead the people into joyful declaration of the wonder of the King they have come to praise and worship.

As the congregation sees the worship team lost in vision as they worship, this will encourage them to follow suit. When we are in the King’s presence, our features change and the expressions on our faces change. Our bodily posture also changes. The congregation will see this and follow the worship team into an encounter with God before His throne.

That’s really all there is to it.

The worship team stays in flow as they lead in worship. This means you may repeat a song as long as the indwelling flow (Jn. 7:38-39) of the Holy Spirit tells you to repeat the song, driving the core message of the song deep into our hearts, transforming us. Then they move on to the next song, or a prophetic word or a prophetic gesture or whatever the Lord is leading them to next.

Additional Sample Prayers for Use at the Beginning of a Worship Service

1.“Lord, we come to present ourselves before Your throne in heavenly worship. Open the eyes of our hearts so we may behold you. We join with every created thing which is in heaven and on the earth in saying, "To Him who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb, be blessing and honor and glory and dominion forever and ever (Rev. 5:13)." Anoint our eyes that we may behold You. Anoint our ears that we may hear You. We come before Your heavenly throne with praise, worship and adoration.”

2.“Lord, we come to present ourselves before Your throne in heavenly worship. Open the eyes of our hearts so we may behold You. Your radiance is like the sunlight. Your power is released in the rays flashing from Your hand. Sickness flees. Mountains are cast down. Your ways are eternal (Hab. 3:5,6).  Anoint our eyes that we may behold You. Anoint our ears that we may hear You. We come before Your heavenly throne with praise, worship and adoration.”

3.“Lord, we come to present ourselves before Your throne in heavenly worship. Open the eyes of our hearts so we may behold You. In your presence there is no darkness. You light up my life, like an eternal sun. You are my Lord and your rule and reign is for all generations (Rev. 22:5). Anoint our eyes that we may behold You. Anoint our ears that we may hear You. We come before Your heavenly throne with praise, worship and adoration.”

4.“Lord, we come to present ourselves before Your throne in heavenly worship. Open the eyes of our hearts so we may behold You. We see the river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb. It brings life to all it touches. It touches us and we are alive because of Your river within our hearts. You allow our lives to bring healing to those we touch. You remove the curse. We choose to serve You (Rev. 22:1,2). Anoint our eyes that we may behold You. Anoint our ears that we may hear You. We come before Your heavenly throne with praise, worship and adoration.”

5.“Lord, we come to present ourselves before Your throne in heavenly worship. Open the eyes of our hearts so we may behold You. We see the twenty-four elders falling down and worshipping God who sits on the throne. We hear the sound of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, saying, "Hallelujah! For the Lord our God, the Almighty, reigns (Rev 19:7,8). We will rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and You have given us fine linen, bright and clean to clothe ourselves with so that we are ready for the marriage. Anoint our eyes that we may behold You. Anoint our ears that we may hear You. We come before Your heavenly throne with praise, worship and adoration.”

6.“Lord, we come to present ourselves before Your throne in heavenly worship. Open the eyes of our hearts so we may behold You. From the end of the earth I call to You when my heart is faint; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For You have been a refuge for me, A tower of strength against the enemy. Let me dwell in Your tent forever; Let me take refuge in the shelter of Your wings (Ps. 61:2-4). Anoint our eyes that we may behold You. Anoint our ears that we may hear You. We come before Your heavenly throne with praise, worship and adoration.”

7.“Lord, we come to present ourselves before Your throne in heavenly worship. Open the eyes of our hearts so we may behold You. You have given me an inheritance. You have prolonged my life. My years will be as many generations. I will abide in Your presence forever. Appoint lovingkindness and truth that they may preserve me. I will sing praise to Your name forever (Ps. 61:5-8). Anoint our eyes that we may behold You. Anoint our ears that we may hear You. We come before Your heavenly throne with praise, worship and adoration.”

Testimony

I decided to check into throne room worship and you had a link to Terry MacAlmon which is a worship session I listened to a long time ago and actually have the CD but until you said I'm seated together with him in heavenly places and I could picture being there and then listened to it I hadn't really put myself in heaven while worshipping.

I was sort of here on earth while looking on to the worshipers in heaven---separated. After making that one connection that I could join with them that I'm actually seated there (which I knew but had not practically applied in worship, only to prayer) it made a lot of difference! I was there! A participator with heaven not an onlooker. I'm already there!!! Kate Price

My THRONE ROOM EXPERIENCE

Background
I first experienced this over 10 years ago at the Firestorm Conference at Life Center, Harrisburg, PA. facilitated by Jeff Jansen.

Get relaxed and comfortable. Close your eyes. This will be spirit-led.

Prayer
Lord, thank you that you love your children and desire for us to see the unseen. Tear down any strongholds, wrong thinking, or anything getting in the way of all that you have for us…… We want to take the time to confess any sins that we have. Bring anything to mind that we need to confess right now so we can ask for forgiveness………… Thank you Lord for your forgiveness, and that you see us through Jesus as being righteous…. Open the eyes of our hearts to see and hear all that you are doing.… Prepare our hearts right now to meet with you…..

The Experience
Imagine seeing two angels walk up to you and stand on either side of you facing in the same direction as you are facing. See each of them join hands with you and share that they are going to take you on a journey to meet with Heavenly Father. You feel yourself being lifted up through the air and in a second you are standing before a door. The angels let go of your hands and without them saying anything, you realize you have a choice to make by reaching out and opening the door.

Emotions race through you- fear of the unknown, excitement at what is to come, not feeling worthy, -lots of emotions flood you. You push through these emotions and open the door a crack. You are amazed at the brilliant light that is coming from within. It is beckoning you to come inside. You open the door wide and step inside and then pause as you get accustom to the light. Then your senses are heightened as you take in all the sights, sounds, smells, and wonders!…. You see brilliant rainbows and colors… fire…lightening… rays of light……You see angels and all those worshipping all around the throne room..… You smell the sweet fragrance of incense..… You hear peals of thunder…the constant worship- Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come…. You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power….You hear worship music, but it’s so different from what you’ve ever experienced before! It’s more like angelic sounds…. You pause to take it all in….…..

Then you remember why you are here, to come into the presence of Almighty God! You look, and through the brilliant light of His glory you see him in the distance sitting on his throne! To his right, you see Jesus sitting on a throne next to his Father. You tentatively walk towards him and as you do, you see Almighty God more clearly in all his majestic splendor; dressed in royal robes of purple, blue and red! You see him stand up from his throne and raise his arms out to you welcoming you to come closer. As you do, you suddenly see Almighty God presenting himself to you as Heavenly Father dressed in robes of white. He knows you will be more comfortable meeting him this way. You haven’t seen his face, but sense there is a big smile on it, as he awaits your arrival. You approach faster now, and in no time at all, you are in his loving arms! You linger here immersed in his love, and indescribable feelings flood over you… Then Heavenly Father invites you to sit on his lap. He gently takes your hand and helps you up. You sit down with him and his one arm is hugging your body and his other arm and hand is cradling your head. He draws you in. It is at this moment that he wants to present himself to you as Daddy, as intimacy deepens. You are so close to him that you can hear his heart beat, and hear him breathe in and out. You are totally relaxed, and all the cares of the world vanish; as you spend time in his loving arms, soaking it all in…. You may choose to stay here awhile getting comfortable with this new found intimacy… or you may hear him begin to talk with you, as he shares his heart with you. Listen now to what he is showing you, to what he is saying to you……

***Let this be a starting place. Take what you experience here to continue to go up to the throne room to meet with Heavenly Father, with Almighty God, with Daddy. Revisit taking in the smells, sights and sounds. Spend time with Jesus too. Be Blessed! -Ann Yeager

Scripture
Revelation 4 (NIV) After this I looked, and there before me was a door standing open in heaven. And the voice I had first heard speaking to me like a trumpet said, “Come up here, and I will show you what must take place after this.” At once I was in the Spirit, and there before me was a throne in heaven with someone sitting on it. And the one who sat there had the appearance of jasper and ruby. A rainbow that shone like an emerald encircled the throne. Surrounding the throne were twenty-four other thrones, and seated on them were twenty-four elders. They were dressed in white and had crowns of gold on their heads. From the throne came flashes of lightning, rumblings and peals of thunder. In front of the throne, seven lamps were blazing. These are the seven spirits of God. Also in front of the throne there was what looked like a sea of glass, clear as crystal. In the center, around the throne, were four living creatures, and they were covered with eyes, in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second was like an ox, the third had a face like a man, the fourth was like a flying eagle. Each of the four living creatures had six wings and was covered with eyes all around, even under its wings. Day and night they never stop saying: “‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.” Whenever the living creatures give glory, honor and thanks to him who sits on the throne and who lives for ever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before him who sits on the throne and worship him who lives for ever and ever. They lay their crowns before the throne and say: “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they were created and have their being.”

Psalm 11:4 The LORD is in His holy temple; the LORD'S throne is in heaven.

1 Kings 22:19 Micaiah said, "Therefore, hear the word of the LORD. I saw the LORD sitting on His throne, and all the host of heaven standing by Him on His right and on His left.

Isaiah 6:1 In the year of King Uzziah's death I saw the Lord sitting on a throne, lofty and exalted, with the train of His robe filling the temple.

Ezekiel 1:26-28 (ESV) And above the expanse over their heads there was the likeness of a throne, in appearance like sapphire; and seated above the likeness of a throne was a likeness with a human appearance. And upward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were gleaming metal, like the appearance of fire enclosed all around. And downward from what had the appearance of his waist I saw as it were the appearance of fire, and there was brightness around him. Like the appearance of the bow that is in the cloud on the day of rain, so was the appearance of the brightness all around. Such was the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord. And when I saw it, I fell on my face, and I heard the voice of one speaking.

Dear Brother Virkler,

I am a worshipper and I can identify fully with this word. I believe that when we are able to unite the entire congregation in the unity of worship, then we will see and step into the heavenly realm.

I also emphasize being a worshipper because, while I could join the choir/group, I prefer the worshipper side knowing that some must also help lead the way from there. Plus, I can go deeper and find the words the Holy Spirit would have prayed or decreed as worship takes place. Doesn't seem to have to be loud or noticeable, but there does seem to be an impact. Sunday during worship I sensed (saw in the spirit) spirits of infirmity streaming out of the church building. Neat.

Much love in Jesus!

Thank you for this inspiring post, Dr. Virkler. When in corporate worship, I have experienced visions into the Throne Room of God and have been so moved in my spirit. During a period of time in which I had been fervently seeking to know the Father's heart, I saw the saints of Heaven dancing joyfully in praise to the Father. Then, to my utter amazement and delight, I saw the Father join them in the dancing, as a loving earthly father joins his little children in dancing at a wedding, for example. My heart filled with joy as I caught a glimpse into our Heavenly Father's beautiful heart.

Thank you for your encouraging ministry to the Body of Christ. You are a blessing!

Do you see the end result of the worship to look the same always? Always has to be slow and "soaking" so to speak. Or do you see the end results in a variety of expressions. Many times ending in adoration for He is the King of Kings, but other times in celebration or dancing or warfare?

Mark Virkler's picture

What is occurring in the Throne Room is different every time. Just watch what is going on and enter in. Could be dancing or worshiping.

This post caught my attention and I felt led to share this site with you: throneroomofgrace dot org It's the Throne Room. There are 45+ verses that scroll every 33 seconds. It's quite powerful and I visit nearly everyday. I love it. It's like going to Heaven. Usually when I sit and read the scriptures as they scroll I end up on a Jesus high. Oh man, I love when I'm on a Jesus high. It's so wonderful! Since I know you've seen Jesus, does the picture of Jesus on the site resemble Him? Thank you for your ministry. Joseph McKinley

Though the economic system (mammon) of this world is under a curse, we have received instructions for how to move out from that dominion and into the blessing of the Kingdom of God. God’s promises to His children have not changed with the whims of government or Wall Street, nor have His directions for how to walk in those promises. We can “choose not to participate” in the economic recession that is around us if we instead choose to obey the logos and rhema of the Lord and enjoy the blessings that result.

Hearing God Through Biblical Meditation

by Mark and Patti Virkler | 179 Pages | $15.99 retail list price

For many years I studied the Bible incorrectly, and it produced death rather than life. Even though I had a knowledge of the Scriptures, I did not personally experience the life and the realities they revealed. The Bible calls this the ministry of death, rather than the ministry of righteousness (2 Cor. 3:6–9). Upon coming out of Bible college, I found myself just like the apostle Paul, attacking those who disagreed with my theology.

How Do You Know?

by Mark and Patti Virkler | 180 Pages

How do you know? What is the process you use to discover truth? I did not ask that question during the first 25 years of my life. I used eleven different methods for discovering truth including: if my parents said so, then it was so. If my teacher said it was so, then it was so. If my pastor said it was so, then it was so. If my theology said it was so, then it was so. I have discarded them all and adopted a twelfth method, which is in harmony with what the Bible teaches. We teach you this method in this book.

Do you have trouble even defining what spirit sensations feel like within you, much less recognizing them? This training was birthed from Mark’s passion to live out of his spirit, and thus release the anointing of God. The problem he faced was lack of clear biblical definition as to what his spirit felt like. So Mark looked up every verse in the Bible on heart and spirit.
