I can be human, but you can’t be God, so there’s only one level on which we can talk. Your level. And I’m very happy with that.

Mark Holloway's picture

God are you saying to start a new conversation? You want me to interrupt my work and have a conversation?

Mark you know what I’m saying.

How do you mean?

I’m saying that you can hear me. You can sense what I’m saying.

Do you mean I can hear you answering the question I just asked?

Yes. You can hear me. You asked should you stop your work and have a conversation, but you already knew my answer. That’s the thing I want to explain. You can so often hear me. So many other people can too. They can hear me without even trying. And much of the time they don’t even realise. It just seems like common sense, or even their own musing. But actually a lot of the time, it’s me, God himself, speaking direct to them, right then.

I don’t put on airs and graces. I don’t need a lot of fuss and bother when I want to talk. I don’t need a big introduction; ‘All rise for God.’ You’ll notice that the Pharisees (then and now) like that sort of treatment, but me? I washed the disciples’ feet.

Isn’t that dangerous though? If your voice sounds like just common sense, or musing, how will people know when it’s actually you?

They need to ask me. They need to say ‘was that really you God?’ It’s what Eve should have said when the filth asked her, ‘has God really said?’ She should have asked me,  ‘God did you REALLY say that about the fruit?’ That’s all it would have taken. If she’d asked me, my voice would have displaced his.

Ok. So is this the conversation you wanted to have, or is this just the pre-amble.

This is the conversation AND the pre-amble. You can hear me. I want you to know that, and I want others to know they can too, often when they don’t even realise it. When they think they’re musing, they’re hearing me. Or they hearing him.

Oh no!!! So it could be either of you?

Of course. What’s the problem with that?

Well it’s so dangerous, if it could be either of you, then how can we possibly live life??  Always wondering whether we are hearing you or him. That’s why the religious don’t like this idea of a constant conversation with you.

Exactly. It’s going to be difficult isn’t it? A battle. Goodness me, I think it says that somewhere in the Bible. You’ll always be under attack. It doesn’t really fit the nice tidy white-picket-fence Christianity that many want, does it? Not at all. Messy, unpredictable, like living with a wild lion in your garden. The best thing to do would be to shoot the lion. Only this lion can’t be shot just once. He and his spawn need constant shooting. You need to be constantly careful. Always watchful.

He loves it when people do their best to carry on with a nice tidy Christian life. Of course historically there’s no such thing as a ‘nice tidy Christian life’. Plenty tried it, but they’re not mentioned much in history. Other than passages like; ‘you are luke warm/and I want to spit you out of my mouth’, but for the most part the Christians of history are those whose lives were anything but comfortable and tidy.

Sorry. But that’s what you signed up for. The Pharisees were comfortable, but I spent my whole time putting down their style of life. That should have given you a clue about what was coming.

Following me is difficult. It needs to be. I’m looking for people prepared to undergo the testing, and the training so that they can live life the way I want it lived. Fulfilling their destinies, creating a better place, helping others. All of those things. Things that mean so much. And yet be careful Mark. Those things mean so little if done without constant discussion with me.

If those things become the goal, they’re just good works. Doing the right things at the wrong time.

And it’s ALWAYS the wrong time if it hasn’t come out of direct discussion with me. If I haven’t spoken direct to you about it, then it’s not my work. Don’t let anyone but me make the decision for you about what I want you to do with your life. With tomorrow. With today. With this hour. With this minute.

Mark you tell me; do I care about the little stuff?

Of course. But many suggest you might not. They ask, ‘does God really care about the little things?’ I’m so amazed I don’t know how to answer when they say that.

Tell them to answer the question themselves. Tell them, to search the scripture and see for themselves if I care about the little things.

God this is going almost a bit fast for me. I can’t even remember what we’re talking about. You’re just talking and I don’t know if this is flowing.

What of it? I’m talking. What does it matter if it doesn’t seem to flow. Who cares? If you found yourself on a train ride with me. Face to face with God in the seat opposite, and you and I struck up a conversation, and you KNEW it was God. No doubt. Do you think you’d stop me if it seemed a little disjointed? ‘My thoughts are not your thoughts’, would you like a few more scriptures?

No I guess you’ve made your point.

Ok. So we’re talking. All over the place. You’d think that was good if you didn’t have to exercise faith. If your friends saw you on that train with me, if they saw us talking together, you’d be proud to announce later that we’d ‘just talked all over the place’. It’s what lovers do. Good friends do it too. There are no rules, save that you’re together. Would you like that with me Mark. No rules, save we’re together and you listen to me.

I’d rather not send that to others God? The naysayers will pick holes in it.

Mark stop fretting. The Bible makes it clear. ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and mind….’ And then goes on to explain that everything comes out of loving me. ‘All the law and the prophets hang on these.’

There are no rules save loving me. Everything comes out of that. Jesus said it.

And Mark you can’t love me as an abstract ‘holy decision’. Not possible, it just ends up as religion. You can only love me by getting to know me. That’s how humans fall in love. I don’t want a pretending, stuffy, made up sort of love. I don’t want something less exciting, but more ‘holy’ than the love you have for a human. I want a human love from you. The best human love, is the love I want. I want you to be most humanly in love with me. And you KNOW that’s impossible with the normal style of Christianity. You tried it for 37 years. Trying to be in love with me, but finding you loved the ones you loved more. Of course you did. You were trying to love me by the rules. Trying to love an idea of me. I want you to fall in love with the real me. You can only do that by getting to know me. And that requires conversation. Not praying at me, but talking back and forward.

God I’ve written thousands of pages of us talking ABOUT YOU AND ME TALKING. Isn’t it time I hung up my pen, or started writing conversations about something else?? This will be boring.

Only to the cynic and the one who doubts. That’s you. But not to the one who hungers for me. Mark what else is there? When you love someone, there’s nothing that suffices for the conversation. And if you have a conversation, with someone who intrigues you, a back and forward, ongoing conversation, then it’s not long before you fall in love. Unless of course they’re not the one for you. But there’s no ‘unlesses’ with me Mark. I AM the one for you. I want a human, back and forward love relationship with you.

I can be human, but you can’t be God, so there’s only one option, one platform on which we can talk. Your level. And that’s a wonderful level as far as I’m concerned. You’ve heard it said Mark. ‘God and man at table sat down’. That’s what I’m after.

Are you talking now about the reformation thing?

Yes. You’re right. The reformation is coming and it is about people talking to me direct. It’s about removing the middle man. So if you find yourself being a middle man, ask me how to hop out of the way and let me talk to people direct.

‘Thought the Lord gave you adversity for food and suffering for drink, he will still be with you to teach you. You will see your teacher with your own eyes. Your own ears will hear him. Right behind you a voice will say, “This is the way you should go,” whether to the right or to the left. ISAIAH 30:19-21 NLT

“I will put my law within them—write it on their hearts!—and be their God. And they will be my people. They will no longer go around setting up schools to teach each other about God. They’ll know me first hand.” JEREMIAH 31:33-34 MSG
