Response When a Husband/Father Faces Prison and Deportation Pastor
Steve from a Lutheran church in Texas receives counseling advice for his
parishioner from the Lord
About two months ago, an Episcopal Franciscan sister with whom I am good
friends brought a young lady to our Wednesday evening soaking prayer time.
This young lady, Sue (names have been changed), was undergoing a difficult
time because her husband, Tom, had been convicted of some offenses and was
awaiting sentencing. Their home church had disowned them, and Sr. Clare asked
if we would minister to them.
The family has been attending worship with us for a couple of weeks now.
Yesterday was the sentencing and he received 42 months in the federal facility
in Beaumont, Texas, followed most likely by deportation to the UK. I received
the following email from Sue this morning...
“Pastor Steve, Sr. Clare and I kept turning to pages in the Bible while we
were waiting for Tom’s case to come up. We read Psalms 38 and 40 and some
other ones and it seemed as if God was going to make things okay. Instead Tom
got the absolute worst case scenario possible.
“We’ve endured so much over the past two and a half years with his ex-wife
doing everything possible to alienate her two kids from him, with her
obtaining bond restrictions eliminating all contact for almost two years, etc.
He lost his job. There have been so many consequences already because of his
arrest.
“But he has worked so hard on his recovery and helping others. He stayed
active in his field and wrote several pages and continued to be as much of a
presence in his field as possible. Our relationship and family have grown
stronger and all around, he’s just a remarkable man.
“I know that God has become very important to us. I’ve believed that if I
prayed and asked Him specifically for our needs, He would be there. The Psalms
we read yesterday seemed to tell me He was going to get us out of this
finally. We are already stronger than most people; we’ve been through more
turmoil than most people do in a lifetime.
“After his sentence, he’ll be deported and unless a miracle occurs, we’ll
lose all contact with Liam and Molly (his other two kids). Their mom even
wrote a letter to the judge saying that sometimes she just wishes ‘he’d be
sent back to England so he won’t bother us’.
“Those kids love him and they have been thriving in their visits with him
since they started the reunification. He never abused them but she has
emotionally twisted them up. She’s made them state many lies that are
graphic in nature against their dad. She’s told them that he doesn’t love
them, that he is ‘scary’, that he was ‘mean’ to her, etc. She’s done
so much to try and destroy their bond and it hasn’t worked.
“But if we are at her mercy to allow contact, we won’t ever speak or see
them; any attempts will be blocked. She’s made it clear over and over her
intentions. I don’t see how God is at work in this. My three children will
have to deal with the loss of having their daddy at home. Liam and Molly won’t
have him or us. Financially, I don’t know yet how I’ll cope and we’ll
eventually leave the country. I just can’t see the light... Sue”
So, I decided to consult the Lord on what He wanted to say about this. I
quieted down, fixed my eyes on Jesus, tuned to flow, and this is what I got...
Lord – What do You want me to say about this situation?
“Steve – Already you are recognizing what a wonderful thing it is to
tune to flow and let Me guide your response to issues. When you read her
reply, you immediately sensed your inability to address her pain and you
turned to Me.
“That’s the very thing she must do as well. No one around her will be able
to fix this situation. I am the only one with the ability to remove the pain.
I will not change the facts of the situation, but I will begin to arrange the
circumstances of the future to ensure that this works out for the ultimate
good of everyone.
“Right now that looks like a murky thing. Right now I am getting the short
end of the popularity stick in the S-- family. She is angry with Me because I
didn’t magically erase the consequences of Tom’s actions. She is angry
with Me because I didn’t cause the judge to give the sentence she wanted to
hear.
“It’s OK, I can handle her anger. She needs to know that I have chosen to
respect human free will. You have prayed and prayed, yet this cup has not
passed and you’ve had to drink it down and there’s more coming before you
get to the dregs of it. I didn’t override Herod or Pilate or the crowd in
the case of My own Son because there was ultimate good to come from their
actions.
“There are some things which you must simply go through to get to the other
side where I want to bring you that you would not have come to in any other
way. All along the way to that place there will be healing and wholeness.
“She has legitimate fears and anger at the whole thing, especially with
regard to the kids. Her ‘mother love’ is a mere shadow of My divine love
for them and the pain she feels at the prospect of the family being broken up
is what I am feeling (but on steroids to the 10th power) toward the whole of
humanity.
“She needs to know that I am truly here in the midst of it with them all,
but her eyes are not able to see Me because of the shock and pain. If only she
could see the sorrow in My eyes and feel the compassion in My heart for what
has come to pass. The day is coming when she will, but for now blindness has
the upper hand. The good news is that I am in the business of restoring sight
to the blind and opening the ears of the deaf.
“Your group will be important in the next weeks because she is at a
dangerous point where she can easily fall into despair and turn from Me. She
needs to be reassured of My character, of My goodness, of My love, of having
the best in view for them despite what the physical circumstances may say at
the moment. Remember, I am the Lord over everything, seen and unseen. Even
this situation is not beyond Me.”

“Today I thanked God for hooking me up with your university.
I had been praying for several months concerning Ephesians 5:1 which instructs
us to imitate Him and be like Him. Through this class ‘Communion
With God’ I am learning practical spiritual stuff which I believe is an
answer to this prayer.
“I too was one who didn’t put a lot of emphasis on dreams,
but God has corrected me in my neglecting of this communication process. Last
week He sent a dream in answer to a prayer of intercession for one of the
members of my ministry. He showed me the spiritual problem (a spirit of fear
had enslaved him), and He showed me the simple solution of how to get him
free. I performed His instructions and sure enough my brother was delivered. I
know he was delivered because there was a change in his outward appearance –
he ‘looked’ free.
“I am so excited about what I'm learning and am anxious to finish my courses
so I can begin teaching this ‘stuff’ to the church. God bless you, and I
thank Him for your diligence in seeking Him and His ways.” Kinney
